ENGINE CONTROL RESEARCH  LABORATORY

——————————————————————————————————————————————

Scope

——————————————————————————————————————————————

The Engine Control Research Laboratory (ECRL) at UH focuses on research, education and technology transfer aspects involving the optimization, control, monitoring and diagnostics of internal combustion engine and powertrain systems with the overall objective of optimizing their fuel economy, improving their reliability and minimizing the production of harmful emissions. ECRL promotes a systems approach investigating the interplay and integration of the various engine and catalyst subsystems with adaptive and multivariable monitoring and control algorithms.

Objectives

——————————————————————————————————————————————

  • Cross-cutting research: ECRL conducts basic and applied research on the crossroad of disciplines that are essential for improving the fuel economy, reliability and environmental friendliness of future internal combustion engines. A main element is the usage of state-of-the-art analysis, design, optimization and control tools for the integrative examination and improved overall design of engine systems.

  • Interdisciplinary student training: ECRL students are educated in the fundamental and the practical aspects of engine systems and control. This is accomplished with the synergy of cross-departmental graduate courses, participation in industry-sponsored projects, involvement in experimentation and testing, and internships at collaborating companies. Coursework from both the Mechanical Engineering and the Chemical Engineering Departments at UH provides the interdisciplinary education needed to address the complexity of modern powertrain control problems.

  • Collaborations and technology transfer: Close collaborations with engine and automotive manufacturers guarantee technology need assessment and technology transfer. Established partnerships present excellent educational, training and employment opportunities for the ECRL graduates.
